An Ice Storm and Grandbaby

When the threat of an ice storm was coming, and I had a grandbaby due at the same time, I told Jonathan Barksdale I thought I would lose my mind worrying about everything if I didn’t stay busy!  We made a few purchases ( links below if interested) and got to work.

First, if you know my journey,  the fact that I painted this entire bathroom, trim, and walls, you know what a victory that was in itself.  Then the fact that I was able to follow that with being a first-time wallpaper hanger, Woo-hoo!

We’ve been in our home for 23 years in April.  We have loved this home, neighborhood, and neighbors.  The fact that we’ve decided to stay until our children move us out has been a very liberating feeling.  We’ve had a couple of additions with the help of my fearless uncle Rene’, who then created the “If you give a mouse a cookie”, syndrome.  In 2017, we did a bonus room addition, which we now lovingly refer to as The Apartment.  It has provided multiple transitional living arrangements already, and I’m sure will provide more to come.  In 2020, we added an additional master suite, to bring in Jonathan’s parents.  We will never begin to thank Rene and Jo Ann enough for everything they did during that time.  They were a great support system and took a need and made it into a seamless, beautiful, addition.

Now, we have a home with 2 masters.  It has provided a perfect place for our new family (Dyson, Clara, and ME (sounds like Emi)) to have a place to stay when they are in town. This is affectionately referred to as the AirBnB.

I often tell people we provide our own entertainment around here.  I literally named the rooms in my house.  When we organize and such I say things like take that to xxx room.  The problem was if I said, “Take that to Dyson’s room”, Jonathan would follow with “Which one”.  That’s a good question because he was 2 when we moved in and has now had 3 different rooms in this house.

Back to our project….

The fun part was accessorizing this bathroom that was originally the home to 2 toddlers, then teenagers, now turned guest bath. This bathroom truly embodies “If These Walls Could Talk”.

A few notes about my links. I’ve linked things from Amazon, but as any good DIYer would do, shop around. I found my towels at HomeGoods at a better price, but it’s also hit or miss there. Amazon, you can one click and have it at your door before you can run around to all the stores finding things at a cheaper price. The wallpaper is peel-and-stick. I was able to purchase on a daily deal so I did not have much invested in it. I bought 4 rolls of paper and had plenty left over at the end. If you are good at measuring, you might do better with waste than I did. The wallpaper is thin and smells like a pool float, but it looks fabulous on the wall and the smell goes away. I would 100% buy it again because I didn’t invest a lot into this and I can change it when I want. It also meant if it was a complete disaster I didn’t waste a lot of money on a project.

The big win here is I was able to do this. Jonathan was there to support and be an extra set of hands, but I DID it. My jacked-up Rheumatoid infected hands did it. I couldn’t have done it without my left hand being able to lay flat and smooth the paper on the wall, but my right hand has been rehabbed some with my left hand and can do more than it could do in August. My amazing hand therapist has taught me so much!

I’m sharing this post now because I’m having my right hand operated on tomorrow. I’m not anxious for any of it except the first 48 hours. Coming out of that nerve block is the real deal. :/ Jonathan is a great caregiver, my doctor is fabulous, my hand therapist is TOP NOTCH, and my support system is the best in this world. I know the next 6 weeks of therapy, rehab, and immobilization will be worth it in the end. Side note, I’m right-handed, so this should be a lot of fun for those around me (insert eye roll here).

If you are reading this, prayers are appreciated. Honestly, I would love your prayers every day because aren’t we called to pray for each other? I guess that’s a different blog post for a different day.
