Opryland, USA

I don’t know anyone around here, that’s my age, that doesn’t have an Opryland memory. It’s funny too because of how many times Opryland comes up in a casual conversation. There’s just something nostalgic about the sheer mention of the fun times in Opryland.

History of Opryland

Opryland, located in Nashville, Tennessee, was a renowned amusement park and entertainment complex that played a significant role in American entertainment history. It opened its doors on May 27, 1972, and quickly became a popular destination for families and music enthusiasts alike. Opryland offered a unique blend of thrilling rides, live shows, and musical performances, drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of country music and the Grand Ole Opry. The park featured iconic attractions such as the Wabash Cannonball roller coaster and the Delta Riverboat, providing visitors with memorable experiences. Sadly, Opryland closed its doors on December 31, 1997, marking the end of an era. Although the physical park is no longer in operation, the legacy of Opryland lives on, as its impact on the entertainment industry and its role in preserving country music history continue to be cherished by many.

Memories

July 1st, 2022, 9:30 PM, I get a random text from Brian Blakely. “How much was an Opryland ticket back in the day”. My first guess was $20. The funny thing is I didn’t ask him why he was asking, I knew it was random, he knew it was random, but it’s how text messages tend to go between lifelong friends. Our texts continue with random Opryland conversations, the Davises were with the Blakelys and they were in an Opryland YouTube worm hole. Jonathan and I were on our porch, where we are most nights, and had our own walk down memory lane.

Fast forward to last Saturday night. We are at the Blakely’s house, celebrating Hayden’s graduation, when Brian brought me out a gift. A vintage, Opryland t-shirt. I loved it! The best part about it is this year is my “vintage year” and I’ve been wearing vintage T-shirts, when I can, on Fridays. Today I proudly wore my Opryland T-shirt, with fresh childhood memories on my mind, and a deep longing for an easier, simpler time. A time where we loaded up in the back of a truck to make the drive to Nashville, with framily (Friends like family), and be foot loose and fancy free, while waiting in lines. This particular trip included Nanny’s chocolate cake on the floor of the hotel lobby, Australian accents, “We have lost Sherry”, and so many other inside jokes that could keep us laughing for hours.
In the days of Opryland, there were no fast passes, lightning lanes, or genie+ style options available. It was a time when we embraced the good old-fashioned tradition of standing in line, patiently waiting for our turn to ride, and making the most of that time by telling stories and sharing laughter. There were no cell phones to distract us, no organized activities to keep us entertained. Instead, we played games like “eye spy” and indulged in a bit of “people-watching” as we grew older. While there are details that have faded from my memory about our trips to Opryland, what remains vivid are the absolute best times spent with some of my most cherished people over the years. And let’s not forget the unique joy of getting a discount on tickets by saving box tops!😜

Would you go back?

In countless conversations, people often ask the question, “If you could go back in time, would you?” Personally, I have always been resolute in my response—absolutely not. However, when it comes to revisiting a summer day in Opryland with my family, I would jump at the opportunity without hesitation.

Opryland holds a special place in my heart, filled with a treasure trove of nostalgic memories. The sights and sounds of the bustling park, the laughter and excitement of the crowd, and the exhilarating rides that made my heart race—they all come flooding back with a wave of warmth and longing. I can still recall the joy of strolling through the park, hand in hand with my loved ones, creating cherished moments that would forever be etched in my mind. The melodies of live music resonating from the stages, the mouthwatering aromas of cotton candy and popcorn, and the thrill of conquering each attraction with gleeful abandon—they all transport me to a time of pure bliss and carefree happiness. Opryland may be a part of the past, but its memory lives on, reminding me of the magic that can be found in simple pleasures and the enduring bond of family and friends.
