Celebrating ME: A Year of Love and Renewal

This week, our family came together to celebrate a truly special milestone—our first granddaughter, Mary Elaine (affectionately known as ME,  /ˈɛ.mi/), turned ONE! It felt like just yesterday we held her for the very first time, marveling at her tiny fingers and the way her bright eyes seemed to take in the whole world. Now, a year later, we found ourselves reflecting on how much she’s grown and the incredible light she has brought into our lives. A light we didn't even know we needed.

John Denver’s words, "Life is so good," echoed in our hearts throughout the celebration. ME has filled our days with laughter, wonder, and a renewed appreciation for the little moments that make life so rich. From her first giggles to her wobbly steps, each milestone has reminded us of how precious this journey truly is.

Her first year was a year of firsts for all of us. We remembered her first smiles that melted our hearts, her first holidays with her at the center of it all, and all the moments of seeing the world through her curious eyes. With every coo, every smile, and her serious side-eye stares, she showed us that life’s beauty lies in its simplicity and the love we share.

This year has been a deeply meaningful one for our family in ways beyond ME’s first birthday. In the same year we laid to rest the patriarch of our family, we celebrated the firsts of the newest generation. There was a poignant beauty in the way life reminded us of its cycles—how one chapter closed, even as another began. Just as we said goodbye to a beloved presence who guided us, we embraced the joy of watching ME grow, carrying forward the love, traditions, and spirit that connect us all.

As we gathered to celebrate ME’s big day, our hearts were full of gratitude. Gratitude for her laughter, her snuggles, and the way she’s brought us all closer together. Gratitude for the joy she’s given her parents and to us as grandparents—a role we’ve grown to treasure more and more every day.

The day was as sweet and delightful as ME herself, complete with balloons, cake, and plenty of pictures to mark this special occasion. But more than the decorations and the treats, it was the love surrounding her that made the day so meaningful.

As John Denver sang, "Life is so good, my life is so good these days." Indeed, with Mary Elaine in our lives, life feels better than ever. Happy 1st birthday, ME! You are our sunshine, our joy, and the heart of our family. Here’s to many more years of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
