Comfy Cozy

What is it about creating a cozy bed? It doesn’t matter if it is 100 degrees or 30, but I have to have a cozy bed. I want the whole picture. The crisp thin soft sheets, a comfy cozy blanket, a thin comforter, and a fluffy duvet make you feel secure, yet not hot. At this stage of my life, and all the hormones, layering is the most important thing.

A few weeks ago we stayed with our friends in their AirBnB. Our bed was so cozy. I never sleep great the first night I stay anywhere but here, was different, and I know it was from the bedding.  I raved to our host about her choices, from the mattress to the duvet. I asked her for the links to everything, and immediately purchased several of the items for my bed, but also for our 2nd primary suite that I’m converting into an AirBnB style area for guests, aka, The Newlyweds.

To me, it doesn’t matter how great the top is if you start with yuk mattresses. I like a firmer mattress these days. I never thought that would be my priority but with aches and pains come different needs. We went through a mattress fitting at Story and Lee when we bought our new bedroom suit. I highly recommend it if you have not tried it.  You and your spouse lay on the bed while it runs a program, and based on that they give each of you a color code.  From there they show you 3 price points that match your color code and there you go, the perfect mattress.

The last item to mention is the comforter or duvet. One year, I found a fantastic deal on a Christmas-themed comforter set at Pottery Barn in the Green Hills area, and it’s become one of my absolute favorites. This comforter is reversible, allowing me to use it for several months, starting in October and November. During that time, I put the plaid side on my bed. When it’s time to decorate for Christmas, I flip it over to the Christmas/winter design, which feels more wintery than “Christmassy”. I usually keep this winter side on until probably through January since it’s still winter here. In February, or sometime in January to February, I switch it back to the plaid side and keep it that way until March 1st. By then, I’m ready for a bedding change that feels more like spring, although I’ve been struggling to find something I like as much as my beloved comforter.

As always, I’m eager to hear your processes in making your bed super cozy, especially now with the temperatures starting to drop!
