What is it about creating a cozy bed? It doesn’t matter if it is 100 degrees or 30, but I have to have a cozy bed. I want the whole picture. The crisp thin soft sheets, a comfy cozy blanket, a thin comforter, and a fluffy duvet make you feel secure, yet not hot. At this stage of my life, and all the hormones, layering is the most important thing.
A few weeks ago we stayed with our friends in their AirBnB. Our bed was so cozy. I never sleep great the first night I stay anywhere but here, was different, and I know it was from the bedding. I raved to our host about her choices, from the mattress to the duvet. I asked her for the links to everything, and immediately purchased several of the items for my bed, but also for our 2nd primary suite that I’m converting into an AirBnB style area for guests, aka, The Newlyweds.
To me, it doesn’t matter how great the top is if you start with yuk mattresses. I like a firmer mattress these days. I never thought that would be my priority but with aches and pains come different needs. We went through a mattress fitting at Story and Lee when we bought our new bedroom suit. I highly recommend it if you have not tried it. You and your spouse lay on the bed while it runs a program, and based on that they give each of you a color code. From there they show you 3 price points that match your color code and there you go, the perfect mattress.
If you are looking for something that can be shipped, let’s face it, if it doesn’t come from Amazon, do we even shop for it anymore, here is the link to the mattress they had in their rooms.
After finding the perfect mattress, you’ll want to protect it, while starting with the first layer of cozy. I bought this mattress pad for my bed and am slowly adding it to all of the beds in our house. It’s waterproof, (perfect for those coffee spills), don’t ask how I know.
Next, we need the perfect sheets. These sheets are perfect. Imagine a set of t-shirt sheets, but they are about 1/100th of the thickness, or a set of sheets that have been washed so many times, that you know a hole will show up the next time you wash them, but they are your absolute favorite.
I like a cozy blanket next, even in the summer, or maybe I should say especially in the summer since I’ll have my thermostat set to icebox temperature. The blanket needs to be cozy, lightweight, thin, but provide a layer of cozy, and comfortable.
Anything between the blanket and the comforter can be whatever style design you are trying to showcase. For me, it’s a thin comforter that provides a top-to-bottom ruffle instead of having a dust ruffle. I purchased it more for style than function, but I do love the thinness it offers and some nights I can’t use the heavy comforter when I first lay down.
The last item to mention is the comforter or duvet. One year, I found a fantastic deal on a Christmas-themed comforter set at Pottery Barn in the Green Hills area, and it’s become one of my absolute favorites. This comforter is reversible, allowing me to use it for several months, starting in October and November. During that time, I put the plaid side on my bed. When it’s time to decorate for Christmas, I flip it over to the Christmas/winter design, which feels more wintery than “Christmassy”. I usually keep this winter side on until probably through January since it’s still winter here. In February, or sometime in January to February, I switch it back to the plaid side and keep it that way until March 1st. By then, I’m ready for a bedding change that feels more like spring, although I’ve been struggling to find something I like as much as my beloved comforter.
After our stay in an Airbnb, I purchased the duvet I’ve linked to. I’m looking forward to the possibility of keeping my favorite comforter on my bed all year round.
If you don’t have a comforter that you love and want to purchase the insert, this is the one she used. We also just bought this for Kyndal’s new setup and it has been a huge win! She loves it!
We have a thing about the ambiance of the room. This includes the candles, lighting, pillow structure, and everything else! Last year I was gifted some Diva Wash from Pimentos and it’s truly the best smell. I’ve started washing all my laundry with All Free and adding a splash of Diva Wash. When we wash the sheets, blankets, and anything else on the bed I use All Free and a BIG splash of Diva Wash. Trust me, you will love the cozy vibe the smell brings.
As always, I’m eager to hear your processes in making your bed super cozy, especially now with the temperatures starting to drop!
